Central American Migrants are Being Returned

In the California and Texas-Mexico borders there is a UN backed program that will, by bus and sometimes by plane, send Central American migrants back home should they desire it. The four million dollar program seeks to provide the means to send those who would like to return home for work and family to wait out their asylum immigration court hearing. The problem that some advocacy groups find is that most of these migrants are unaware of the consequences should they fail to make it back to the border in time.

From what the article illustrates, the trip back home is one way only. As of late August, over 37,000 Central Americans have gone back but only 400 or so via the International Organization for Migration (IOM) transportation program. While a program conjured with good intentions, the worry is that these migrants would have to, through illegal means, have to make it back in time for court hearings. Some migrants understand the risk, they would rather work than wait out the four month wait time for some of these people. Others do seem to understand that staying put is perhaps the best course of action for admission without too much hassle. It should also be noted that the IOM is attempting, for migrant children who arrive alone, to send some of the more vulnerable immigrants home via plane.
